In Marschel Paul’s debut novelTHE SPIRIT ROOM, two adolescent sisters, Izzie and Clara, are pressed into becoming hoax mediums by their exploitive father just before the Civil War in upstate New York. While playing at being a medium, Izzie, the older sister, begins to hear voices and comes to realize she must confront the legacy of her mother, who under the spell of spirit voices, committed suicide in Seneca Lake. When Izzie marries a water-cure physician and leaves for Rochester with him, Clara, no longer protected by her lost mother or older sister, must find the fortitude to refuse the path her father has chosen for her, a far darker place than the game of hoax spiritualism.
